Long before the germ theory of disease, there was the miasma theory, which held that noxious exhalations from stinking swamps could cause diseases. This theory was supported in Ancient Greece and lasted into the 18th century – though I’ve seen a similar thing published recently saying that if you can smell the phytoplankton in a lake, they are polluting your body with toxins. The word miasma can be found from the mid-17th century, again from Greek, where it derives from a root meaning stain or pollution. Malaria, or “bad air”, comes from the same miasmatic swamp connection. So it is a natural jump to miasthma , since the th is almost silent anyway. Miasthma is due to all the crap in the air.

Creepy and very Objectionable Gothic blog I feel the bile creeping up my throught again. That voice in my head echoing in its tomb. That coma like wave of sadness. I dwell on the poisons. A miasthma of grief wresting within black lungs.
(The use of “throught” in the last one makes me think that the miasthma in this example is genuine and not an intentional blend. “my throught” gets an amazing 12,100 ughits.)

Downgrades in right field and at catcher, question marks waiting to become exclamation points (the bad kind, the kind at the end of a swear) in left and at second and at first. This miasthma of downgrades, locking in broken-down guys and counterintuitive lateral-at-best moves… Getting Angel Pagan is definitely of the third type, sure, a surreality of a lateral move that in and of itself would be neutrally-strange but… it just adds to the overall picture.

Evolution vs. religion discussion board I was talking about medical knowledge. We would have no germ theory and we would still believe in stupid medical theories like Myasthma and blood letting. Both of these were disproven under the context of evolution.
