"low man on the token pole"

Totem poles are arguably poles on which tokens are displayed. This is really rare and seems to appear in authentic citations only in versions of the “low man on the totem pole” phrase. There are, however, many more joking uses of the phrase. Examples:

Johnny Unitas and Jim Parker entered professional football at the opposite
end of the token pole but ended their careers. as arguably the greatest at their respective positions.
