A bulkhead is a nautical term for a vertical wall inside a ship, which serves to strengthen the hull and occasionally to maintain different compartments watertight. A bridgehead is an area that has been captured in hostile territory, that provides a foothold and opens the way to further expansion. The word is also used for a defended position at the head of a bridge to protect it from enemy advances, and, metaphorically, for an established presence that will allow further capture of markets and minds. A beachhead, on the other hand, is a bridgehead on a beach allowing for amphibious landing of troops.
You can’t establish a bulkhead if you’re not building a ship, though several make the claim. A cute malapropism.
