“could of” a frequent error for “could have”

Welcome to the forum, exceptbasses. “Could of” has been submitted a number of times in the past. I think most regulars here would say that it isn’t an eggcorn because it’s unclear that the shift from “have” to “of” is one that involves any change of imagery for the speakers. I have a vague memory that someone strongly disagreed with that view, but I can’t find any post to support that memory.
