"bare market" for "bear market"

Wikipedia and other web resources report that the origins of the stock market phrases “bear market” and “bull market” are obscure. In any case, “bear market” doesn’t appear to have started life as “bare market,” but that reanalysis makes very good sense – and an excellent eggcorn. (Though if you really think about it, a “bear market” is one in which the virtual shelves aren’t bare, but are instead full of unsold stocks.) The few instances of “bowl market” that I was able to find feel more like a malapropism than an eggcorn. Examples:

I know buying on the down slope makes sense in a bull market. But what about a bare market? … /1492.html
