Re: "Rod Iron Fence" for Wrought Iron Fence

Today I attended a meeting at the University where I work. (I work in a non-academic department.) The director of the Building and Grounds Department gave his report. One of the summer’s goals, as spelled out in his Power-Point presentation, is to replace a “rod iron” gate!

Yeah, it makes sense. A true wrought-iron gate consists of iron bars (or rods) that were bent and shaped (or wrought) and assembled together by a blacksmith.

I looked for examples of “rod iron” with Google.

The Red Willow Forge (http://redwillowforge.com/) uses both spellings, probably in order to capture “hits” from people who search using the wrong spelling.

This page (http://www.cowboyindian.com/sciwfire.htm) that sells fireplace accessories uses the spelling “rod iron” twice in the links at the bottom of the page.

This search results on this page (http://www.mr-cad.com/rod-iron-main-gates-search-1.html) show lots of “rod iron gates” but I think you get the same results when you search for “wrought iron gates.” (Hey, I didn’t realize they were so cheap!)

Craig’s List offers a “rod iron” birdcage here: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/hsh/334327080.html

You also get lots of hits on “rot iron,” but it’s harder to see what imagery supports this.

There’s a business in Portland OR called “rot iron” (http://rotiron.com/photos.html) but it isn’t clear whether they’re making a deliberate pun.

I can’t imagine that “rod iron” is appropriate in any context: Wouldn’t the adjective-of-choice be “iron-rod” instead?

“Rot” for “wrought” has been mentioned in both our Database and our Forum, but I’ve encountered an example of it going in the opposite direction.

Wine also doesn’t wrought your brain cells.

Where I come from, it is pronounced, and sometimes written, “rod arn.” I saw it on a “For Sale” sign for a wrought iron lamp.

Re: "Rod Iron Fence" for Wrought Iron Fence

In a conversation a few years back my Dad called wrought Iron “Wroth Iron”, ever since then whenever I say something incorrect, the Hubster in turn says “okay, Wroth Iron”.
R: OMG, my ex’s family said “wroth iron” too! DROVE ME NUTS. O
http://thebloggess.com/2014/09/28/im-ju … k-anymore/

I suppose if I were wrought up in that manner, I might be permanently wroth as well.

BTW…

The horrible emptiness, I can only say, “What had God wroth?” and shake my head…
