"as soon" becomes "assume" in New York Times

First time poster, not quite sure if I’ve got this right, but here goes stumbled across this nice one in the NYT online today.

“In Sunday’s final Djokovic will face the world No. 1, Roger Federer in a rematch of a 2008 Open semifinal that Djokovic would just assume erase from his memory.”

Welcome to the forum, madrumos. You’ve found an instance of a classic eggcorn—you can see the Database entry for this here: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/english/122/assume/

The fact that your example was written by a NYT reporter shows just how pervasive some eggcorns can be.
