'story-eyed' for 'starry-eyed'

To describe someone as starry-eyed suggests that they are also dreamy, gullible or otherwise trusting and idealistic. ‘Story eyed’ reminds me of the expression on the faces of young children when they are enthralled by a well-told tale, and I suppose the above adjectives would apply equally.

Works for me.

I wonder what the image behind “starry-eyed” is. I could see it referring to someone being sad and crying-tears give the eyes a liquid sheen that reflects points of light. But what is the connection between stars and a vacuous stare?

Personally, I’ve always thought of it as related to metaphors of being grounded as opposed to having ones head in the sky. Various idioms for foolishness describe thoughts/head/eyes in the sky/stars/heavens, while idioms for practicality describe feet/bottoms/ or (rarely) viscera on the earth or ground.

Chad’s just reminded me of one of my favourite eggcorns, star-craving mad, which represents an extreme of such romantic naivety.
