"All of the sudden"

As a child, I always said “all of the sudden” instead of “all of a sudden.” I was actually shocked that I was wrong, because I had rationalized it as “the.” It just made sense to me—something like “in the moment” or whatever. Since then I have heard a few other people use this instead of “a sudden.” Still, “the sudden” almost makes more sense to me in a way.
