"ostrichized" for ostracized

“Ostracism” is punishment by social exclusion. “Ostrichism” is a recently coined word (I think) that means to put your head in the sand, to hide from or refuse to recognize unpleasant truths. However, when you are being socially ostrichized, in the sense of being ignored or shunned by society, then I think it is safe to say that you are the victim of a really big eggcorn.

Book review
Capote was ostrichised by his high society “friends” for this novel when excerpts were published in Esquire.

The point is, by reading posts, I have come to the conclusion that Israel is being singled out and ostrichised by Amnesty in a way that no other state is singled out and ostrichised for acts that every other state on Earth with an army has also done.

I?m vegan, and all I want is for people to respect our choice to not eat meat, but no. Every time we go a restaurant and everyone else is eating meat, we get ostrichized.

No you may not [be] just lynched for “Race-Mixing”. You may be socially ostrichized, though.

Not sure what SETO, the Society for the Ethical Treatment of Ostriches, will say about this, but I think it’s a great eggcorn.

I’ve been doing this too long to spontaneously laugh aloud at many posts, but this one made my day. Great find.

Re: "ostrichized" for ostracized

I tried to pronounce “ostrichised” out loud today and it kept coming out ostrichsized. So I scanned the horizon and what do you know.

Re: "ostrichized" for ostracized

There are also many dozens of unique hits for “austracized.” Maybe that refers to being “exiled to the East” or “relegated to Austria” or something. Some instances are noms de Web or journalistic puns about Central European politics, but most look to be authentic.

btw, this is a kind of Lehmann’s eggcorn, if it’s real—a proper name discerned as part of the structure.

Re: "ostrichized" for ostracized

Ostracism frequently leads to ouster from a group or community; a handful of writers seem to have made this connection:

Continueing to play in and support an organization and game that has protected and supported pedophilia, oustercised and dishonoured many that you called a friends.
http://www.5wwwww5.com/renaissanceknig/ … ssanceknig

I once read in Jet magazine where a black girl was oustercized in high school because she made straight A’s, teased about it, had no friends.
http://blog.panachereport.com/2008/07/1 … -life.aspx

People don’t like folks on a soap box preaching to them about their sins and oustercizing them for it.
http://forums.somd.com/religion/47305-p … ned-3.html

But they are happy to have Bush and Cheney come into their districts to raise money. I’m not buying this oustercizing story. After the election, they will be posing with both of them for family photos.

There are actually more hits for “oustracism,” but I’m not sure that most of those aren’t just a misspelling.

Re: "ostrichized" for ostracized

‘Austracized’ suggests a convict ship sent South to Botany Bay, or perhaps being subjected to austere treatment; given the number of hits there is certainly something eggcornish afoot.
Another variant is astrasized – becoming no more than a distant pinprick of light in the night sky:

... if one has a differing opinion than the majority on this board that they are criticized and astrasized for it even if they can back it up with facts. ...
www.boardratsboard.com/index.php?topic=1035.15

... get into n awfull mess, and circumstances that change sometimes cause a stir that reaches the remotest acquaintance and the most astrasized relative. ...
otvet.mail.ru/question/19429031

They and anyone associating with them will be astrasized, vilified and isolated. We will disassociate with and despise them. As in …

It’s a while since we had such a versatile performer. Perhaps we could call such creatures chamele-eggcorns.

Re: "ostrichized" for ostracized

I like the image that some eggcorns are in camouflage. I followed up on the austere connection, Peter, and found it hiding in ostracize as austericize.

I’ve had to stop kidding myself, I’m fat. Apparently, designers austericize for being overweight because all the plus size dresses are BUTT FREAKING UGLY.

Unfortunately I haven’t found “austriasized” except as a pun.
