claptrap » crab trap

Seen here. This is the first usage of this that I’ve seen, but it doesn’t seem all that far-fetched if you think of claptrap/crab trap as not only referring to nonsense, but being a nonsensical phrase. (Wiktionary says claptrap is “Theater slang, c. 1730, referring to theatrical devices or gags used to incite applause.”)
