For most of us, the verb “stem” has become pretty opaque. But substituting “stamp” provides a fairly vivid illustration of the phrase – even if it does inject more than a hint of futility into the proceedings. This seems to be current in the English of Southeast Asia; most of the hits I found were from Hong Kong, Cambodia, or Malaysia. Examples:
