An entertaining interchange just now between two people I know well:
A: It would cause ruffles … riffles? … ruffles? … ripples? which is it?
B: It’s ruffles … ripples.
Blending making waves (with the ripples going on and on) and ruffling feathers, no doubt. Riffles is a nice one-word blend. Doing riffs on rupples, you might say.

We use riffles to refer to stream sections that are not quite exciting or rippled enough to be considered rapids – they’re a trifle ripply. Google Translate has real problems with riffles. It insists on translating them as fusils or armes à feu (firearms).
