“avalaunch” for “avalanche”

Rock and debris are launched downhill in an avalanche. I first wrote this up about a year ago and for some reason never posted it. At that time I wrote that it was “Surprisingly rare – I saw only 8 total, and at least 2 or 3 of those are questionable.” Either I was being clueless, or there’s been an avalanche of new examples in the past year – I found 2-3 dozen instances. There are many more citations for “avalaunche,” but that seemed as likely to be a misspelling as an eggcorn to me. Examples:

Will california start an avalaunch of USA Bond defaults?

The page-turner concludes that a downturn in housing is only the primer for an avalaunch of worse developments to come.

Like it. It has classic lines.
