I’ve heard this variant almost as often as its acorn but always assumed it had already been mentioned. Apparently not, although ‘lax’ versions abound. The indolence of the original is reinforced by lapse suggesting a failure to maintain a higher standard or state:

We also get “lapse->lax” transformations. I see a score of hits out there for “prolaxed uterus,” “prolaxed hemorrhoids,” “prolaxed anus,” etc., in place of the medically correct “prolapsed.” “Prolapse” is a medical term for an organ that has slipped out of its proper place. Lapsed organs are usually lax.
