'homaphrodite' for 'hermaphrodite'

The word appears to be getting some leakage from ‘homosexual,’ even though the two conditions are quite distinct. 16,000 ghits:

she’s not a guy-she’s a homaphrodite-if i spelled that corectly-a woman with female and male sexual organs.

Guinea pigs are not homaphrodites, No. But however, due to some inbreeding, mutation may occur and a homaphrodite guinea pig may be born.

we all have our crosses to bear. i happen to be a homaphrodite and am also very sensitive about it.

Re: 'homaphrodite' for 'hermaphrodite'

I think some people have the homo stem coming to mean ‘man’ in the sense of ‘male’ rather than the sense ‘human’ and see that meaning in the word homosexual . (For many I think the prototypical homosexual is male, and some hesitate to include lesbians in the word when they use it.) Anyhow, if homo ‘male’ is compounded with Aphrodite ‘(emphatically female) goddess of (sexual) love’, I think you have a pretty good eggcorn.

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
