The New Yorker describes the hypertensive condition that is known as preeclampsia, involving convulsions and even coma during or just after pregnancy, this way: “By this time, the disease had been observed for more than two thousand years. As one ancient Greek text put it, “In pregnancy, the onset of drowsy headaches with heaviness is bad; such cases are perhaps liable to some sort of fits at the same time”—apparently an allusion to the seizures that occur when preeclampsia becomes eclampsia. (“Eclampsia” is derived from the Greek word for “a shining forth,” and is thought to refer to the bright flashes that women sometimes see during their seizures.)”

Preecrampsia makes a more explicit references to the convulsions and seizures.

My swelling is not that bad and I do not have the preecrampsia yet. My blood pressure is good.

There are also some “preclampsia” connections that may be locating “clamp” as a root within preeclampsia, rather than ek- “out” + lampein “to flash”.
