Here’s one for David T: at a student presentation on mosses last month one of the presenters said “we’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg.†Seems like the phrase may be a blend of “tip of the iceberg†and something about touching an extremity. An example of the rule “if one metaphor is good, two are better.â€

Thanks, yes, a worthy addition.

Besides the idea of touching an extremity may well be the notion of touching with an extremity: we’ve barely touched on (or begun to touch on) the complexities involved.

A mixture I don’t think I’d reported here: “I wouldn’t touch that with my hand tied behind my back.†Another I once came out with myself: “You could’ve knocked me over with a ten-foot pole.â€
