tip blend

Here’s one for David T: at a student presentation on mosses last month one of the presenters said “we’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg.” Seems like the phrase may be a blend of “tip of the iceberg” and something about touching an extremity. An example of the rule “if one metaphor is good, two are better.”

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

Re: tip blend

Thanks, yes, a worthy addition.
.
Besides the idea of touching an extremity may well be the notion of touching with an extremity: we’ve barely touched on (or begun to touch on) the complexities involved.
.
A mixture I don’t think I’d reported here: “I wouldn’t touch that with my hand tied behind my back.” Another I once came out with myself: “You could’ve knocked me over with a ten-foot pole.”

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
