The transition from “strapped” to “stripped” would seem to be imagery based … since the two words don’t sound enough alike to inspire the alteration. So, the utterer may have selected “stripped” because the imagery is much clearer than “strapped.”

Yes, it certainly makes more sense than the original which seems to repay close examination by becoming even more opaque. Examples of variants like “stripped for cash” are much in evidence too. I’m not sure I’d agree with the words not sounding similar enough to inspire alteration, for vowels seem to get smeared about differently from place to place; much of the media here for example seem to have anathematized the vowel ‘u’ and now refer to unexpected things happening “soddenly” when no trace of dampness is meant. I try not to get irked when I hear of sospects escaping in a robber dinghy but the more widespread it gets the weaker my efforts become.
