'whacking (one's) brain' for 'racking (one's) brain'

Folk trying to remember things sometimes tap the temples or clout the cranium as if to dislodge the errant information, though resting the forehead on the bunched fingertips of one hand does it for others. Or possibly the acorn could first have been picked up from someone with a w for r speech difficulty and eggcornishly interpreted:

Sonny kept whacking her brain, trying to recall a name or a date, until she came the conclusion that this little boy must have won the ticket no less than …

Amu’s face turned even redder as she whacked her brain trying to find something to say to explain the situation. Nothing. ...

I’m whacking my brains for ideas. And I fail miserably! However I won’t give up. If you have ideas, send them this way please. ...

The questions often result to contestants whacking their brains in trying to figure out something they have forgotten long ago.

“You’re still drunk, Chloe” he stated the obvious whacking his brains to come up with a solution to this mess. ...
