"Raisin Brand Cereal"

I did a search for bran>>brand on the Database/forum some time ago, and my memory was that I’d found nothing. After I wrote up the following post, I searched again, and got what looked like a direct hit from the older version of the forum – but I couldn’t locate the actual citation. I’m now pretty convinced the hit is an inaccessible link from offsite, but my apologies (probably to Ken) if I’m retreading old ground for us.

We’ve had various brand>>bran variations on the forum before, but I don’t think we’ve covered bran>>brand. For many users, “raisin bran” cereal is clearly a “brand” of breakfast food that has raisins in it. The substitution is common – hundreds of ughits (most on cooking/nutrition sites) – and it’s easy to find both capitalized and lowercase versions of “raisin brand.” The wikipedia page for “raisin bran” claims (without attribution) that the phrase was once trademarked but is now “genericized” and no longer proprietary for any company. If so, that ironizes this reshaping just a bit. Examples:

For example this Sat i had a bowl of raisin brand cereal with skim milk for break fast, a banana and 6-10 black berries for a snack, 8oz boneless chicken breast with spinach salad for lunch, a kiwi and protein shake with skim milk for snake, and finally a 22 oz t-bone steak and green beans for dinner.

During this time, I stayed away from eating Post Raisin Brand cereal and I ran out of my Vitamin Shoppe multi-vitamins.

[Multiple instances on this site – as David Tuggy might say, “Raisin Brand” is clearly standard for this speaker.]

If the cramping is a result of the inability to go to the bathroom eat a food that is high in fiber such as Raisin Brand cereal or eat or drink prune juice.

Re: "Raisin Brand Cereal"

Hi Pat. It ’s item #292 in the ghostly and fabled old commentary thread, but well worth resurrecting anyway. Here’s the entry:

‘brand’ for ‘bran.’ Especially prevalent in the phrase ‘raisin brand.’ In some users this appears to reflect confusion on the limits of commercial branding. Examples-
… Kraft, the largest packaged-food company in the United States, produces 7000
food products including Post Raisin Brand cereal, Oreo cookies, …

… Juices (Orange, Grapefruit, Apple) Fresh Raisin Brand and Carrot Muffines,
Hot Oatmeal, Cold Cereal served with 2% milk, butter & Preserves, Coffee/Tea …

… Which brand of raisin brand has the most raisins?

Re: "Raisin Brand Cereal"

Aha! Well, I’m happy to have added more evidence to your post, Ken.

What I want to know is how you got to post 292. It falls into our fabled hole between posts 199 and 566—which Kem wrote about a couple of years ago; once you gave me the post number I was able to get there through web.archive. But I wonder whether you know a more direct route.

(Later addition: here’s Kem’s post on the problem from 2008: http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/forum/view … hp?id=3109)

Re: "Raisin Brand Cereal"

In the attempt to increase my omega-3 fatty acid intake during pregnancy, I started eating a flax cereal, which I now have been eating for the lifetime of my older child. When she wants some of my cereal or any other flake-type cereal, she asks for “Flat cereal”.
