Hire and higher

I see this is in the database

http://eggcorns.lascribe.net/english/467/higher/

in the context of ‘giving a job to’ but it doesn’t make that much sense unless being taken on is a step up the ladder. In the context of HP, hire purchase, a credit arrangement for buying something you can’t afford on installments where the title passes to you when the thing is paid for, ‘higher purchase’ suggests, quite rightly I imagine, that you end up paying….... a higher purchase price, unsurprisingly. It’s a slightly antiquated term to my mind, and may only be BrE. How it’s different from ‘leasing’ and so on eludes me.

‘i bought a car on higher purchase , am i allowed to sell it ?’

‘Why do people buy cars on higher purchase?’

‘i have my car on higher purchase and have paid off over 50% of the higher purchase price’

On the plain in Spain where it mainly rains.

Re: Hire and higher

Here’s an example I just encountered in an Internet comment thread: ”...say a person has in their account information saying that they are pregnant and the company does not higher them, they can argue it was because the company did not want to higher a pregnant woman…”. I don’t remember seeing this one before, so I got a little chuckle out of it.

Just sayin’.
