malice aforethought vs. malice of forethought

Look up both in google, one will bring up a legal concept dealing with intentions and premeditated murder. One will give the myspace page for a band with the (latter) eggcorn version.

This was one I originally heard in college. I was taking theoretical physics and one thing that you do in that subject is try to guess the form of a solution to a problem. Since my teacher was introducing us to the subject, he would naturally always choose the correct form of the solution. However, when one is really doing physics, you spend a great deal of time choosing the wrong form of a solution.

To key us in to the absurdity of always correctly choosing the form of the solution our teach would say “So, with malice of forethought we choose the correct solution <Z>”, with “malice of forethought” effectively meaning “with 20/20 hindsight”.

Reading the wikipedia explantion of “malice aforethought” i dont understand the definition of the term, but understand that the definitions are related.

Welcome to the forum, Dr. X. A choice eggcorn, also submitted by David Tuggy at the end of 2009, here. Good to have some firsthand confirmation.
