Pot pourri

Houseplants question: How do you make flowers into popery?

It’s not natural to smell like fake popery all the time.

It reminds me kind of a fruity christmas popery

Could a pejorative term for Roman Catholicism have got mixed up with pot pourri in people’s minds ? After all, another equally less than pleasant term for what sometimes happens in RC and high Anglican/Episcopal church services is ‘smells and bells’.
Thus: Incense=Popery=Pot Pourri.

Don’t think for a moment that I remotely approve of the word. Though I have to admit that I find the mix-up quite funny in its way.
