'ratchet and paw' for 'ratchet and pawl'

The ratchet and pawl mechanism consists of a notched wheel (the ratchet) and an arm-like device (the pawl) that engages the notches on the ratchet, so as to permit rotation in one direction only. Some pawls look vaguely like paws. Examples:
