"Carried on the soldiers" for "shoulders"

The Guardian on Saturday (3/6-06) in the “How the bloggers saw it …” piece quotes the following:

http://netroots.wordpress.com/2006/05/31/more-gore/

“Gore is still being ambiguous about his feelins on running for president in 2008. Many believe that he is waiting to be the candidate that has such a buzz of support that he has no choice but to succumb to the will of the people and be carried to the convention on their soldiers. That’s what I think or at least its what I hope.”

I can see how the “carried on their soldiers” evokes the idea of a coup d’état so the eggcorn reformation is there. The problem is of course that this blogger seems to be pro-Gore, so the imagery seems a bit out of place.
