A promissory note is a legal instrument in which you express your explicit resolve to repay the amount lent. I think it’s reasonable to think of it as “a promise to be sorry” about defaulting – so sorry that you won’t let that happen . There are 28 unique ghits; some are jokes, many are embedded in a sentence in a foreign language – though the originals of a few very good candidates weren’t accessible for inclusion here. Examples:
