The arboreal forest

Heard this morning in a radio interview with a film director who has taken up the cause of environmental destruction in the mining of Alberta’s tar sands. The surface mines have had a big impact on a part of the northern, or boreal, forest, which was referred to as the “arboreal forest”.

The odd formatting in the last example was the only way to indicate the link without creating havoc in the post.

Note added later: “Arboreal” is an adjective usually applied to animals that live in trees. By his own account, this director, who is famous for the creation of a race of arboreal creatures in film, makes a connection between his film and his work for aboriginal people in Alberta.

From a transcript of an earlier interview:

Public radio And you think, how are they ever going to reclaim this and turn it back into the beautiful arboreal forest that was there before.

Re: The arboreal forest

A confusion between trees and the north wind. The rumbles you hear are Latinists spinning in their graves.
