Homade for home made

I was just listening to someone at work refer to his mother’s cookie recipe. From the speed and phonetics of his words I started to wonder how he spelled home made since it sounded “homade”. Then what do I find, thousands of Google hits for his version of the word. I don’t know what to call it (eggcorn, slip, or reshape), but I know it’s not the original word.

Re: Homade for home made

Maybe his mother IS an actual ‘Ho’? Ho-made cookies! Brilliant!

Well, snarkymikey, not sure how funny that is.

Otherwise, I’m missing the semantic component there. It’s maybe some kind of contracted spelling.

Re: Homade for home made

To make it worse, “home made” no longer means “made at home” as evidenced by the many restaurants that offer home-made desserts and other foods. I’m sure these desserts (except in a few small restaurants) were not made in homes at all, so they are not home made.
