"at the cold face" for "at the coalface"

Espionage writer Len Deighton is just the chap chipping away at the coal-face, right?. He makes a contrast in his books between those at the coal face of international espionage, and those who “make marks on paper”. Those at the coal face are actively involved in the nitty-gritty of frontline action. They’re face-to-face with the cold face of reality.

But the topic areas and what is contemporary should be generated by those at the coldface – the coaches.
