Perhaps the microbiological dictum: “everything is everywhere and the environment selects (census Baas-Becking 1934)â€, should be replaced by “every microbial process is everywhere but the milieu selects.
This unusual usage of census was in an e-mail from Japan today inviting submissions to a session at a conference to be held in there this summer. It looks as though Mr. Baas-Becking’s work was being cited or his opinion was being sought. I’m fairly sure the word wanted was sensu, “in the sense of”. A quick shufti revealed that sensu is also Japanese for those fans that geishas and tourists wave, so there may have been some resistance to thinking that that was the spelling.
