A mansard roof is named for the architect François Mansart.
Not all mansions have mansard roofs, and also not all buildings with mansard roofs are mansions.
Image caption: “A second empire style building with a mansion roof built in the late 19th century.”
Meeting minutes: “To restore that building, with its porch and mansioned roof, eliminating the back portion and abutting the new stuff right up to it, is a remarkably refreshing idea.”
A mansard roof has two different pitches – steep around the edge and flatter (though not totally flat) on top.
Twitter status update: “If 1 key is good then 5 keys are better! Also more pitch changes than a mansion roof.”
