The White House is a marvelous soapbox, according to Theodore Roosevelt, the poor man’s friend. It is hard to discern clearly what users of the altered imagery of a bully puppet are getting at. It may be a pure mondegreen. In the hits collected below, the sense seems to vary, but leans toward coercion by some sort of self-appointed or tinpot regime. Punchinello takes the stage.
fewer and fewer bloggers seem to allow anyone to disagree with them. those comments are increasingly being “filtered out” along with the spam. and that’s when commenting is even turned-on at all. some people seem to prefer having a bully-puppet.
Otherwise, various strange comments suggest that politicians don’t have a bully puppet, but are bully puppets. This one is easier to understand. Sort of.
The switch, y’know, almost makes sense—if you don’t think of a bully pulpit as a place but as a thing, and you aren’t quite sure what a pulpit is.
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
