huge cry < hue and cry

We’ve already had a hewing cry and a human cry (here ) but not this.

there would have been such a huge cry against it, it would not have passed.

But look for a huge cry against foreign aid to surface as one state after another declares bankruptcy.

When there is a huge cry against corruption, he wanted to promote BJP as a solution for India against corruption.

As the gravity of this theft became apparent, a huge cry went out. Suddenly, from beyond the darkness came the sound of thundering hooves.

It was such blatant injustice, that a huge cry went out, and they cancelled ALL extra voting time,

It is one of those that work too well, so I’m including it here in the slips rather than in the contributions. Most people don’t know what the hue and cry originally was, but have only heard the phrase with the more modern meanings which amount to “a loud outcry”, often one of outrage or summoning help after an attack. A huge outcry is a fine and non-eggcornical phrase, so why not a huge cry . Somehow it does seem likely to be eggcorned off a hue and cry but it would be very hard to prove it.

*If the human mind were simple enough for us to understand,
we would be too simple-minded to understand it* .

(Possible Corollary: it is, and we are .)
