It is one of those that work too well, so I’m including it here in the slips rather than in the contributions. Most people don’t know what the hue and cry originally was, but have only heard the phrase with the more modern meanings which amount to “a loud outcry”, often one of outrage or summoning help after an attack. A huge outcry is a fine and non-eggcornical phrase, so why not a huge cry . Somehow it does seem likely to be eggcorned off a hue and cry but it would be very hard to prove it.
