One of the blend-like ones; but there are lots of people who think that protuberant must have protrusion truding in there somewhere:
[NY Times] Evolution has left roosters with little to crow about in the protruberant genitalia department.
[medical sites:] Otoplasty or ear reshaping is employed in patients who have protruberant ears.
underdevelopment of the alveolar ridges, frontal bossing, a depressed nasal bridge, protruberant lips, and hypotrichosis.

Good one! Protruberance makes good sense. The forward, outward potato is dropped in favour of protruding exuberance. Kerouac went protruberant one better as protruderant.

It’s an eggcorn blend with deep historical roots. The OED has a citation for “protruberance” from the mid 1700s.
Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
