I know we’ve seen “air on the side of caution” but here for your perusal is
Personally I’d rather er on the side of caution and have everything asked for
and there is no shortage of more examples. To “er” may well be a genuine attempt at spelling “err”. But I want it to be onomatopoeic: a bit like to “um and ah”. It’s another one to never be able to be sure about.

So i think most people eh on the side of caution as you never know if they are drunk and aggressive or on drugs and volitile.

There are also loads of “veer on the side of caution” which really is a reshaping of the image. It’s only eggcornic if and when it has arisen from a mis-hearing of “I’ve erred”. Which it may.
