"pie and ear" for "pioneer"

I forget what put this one into my head. I think I heard someone say it on TV. A web search yielded only 3 examples that didn’t seem to be puns, and two of those were from the same source.

there will be plenty of old ones about which don’t have the safety brake – we’re still using the 36” Pie and Ear which we bought secondhand in the 1950s

That was our first time chair-dancing, and I believe Dood and I were pie and ears or the chair-dancing fad that later swept the dance floors of new wave shows throughout Clevo in the mid 80’s.

And from the same source:

Of course everone knows how Trent went on to greatness as a pie and ear with Nine Inch Nails.

Coming up with a convincing eggcornish meaning connection for this substitution would be a bit of a stretch. But that may be moot anyway, with only three examples found.
