My wife came across someone who called her shoulder blades shoulder plates which seems reasonable to me, these bits of us being at least as plate-like as blade-like. Additionally, it wouldn’t be difficult to mis-hear ‘blade’ as ‘plate’ in situations where crisp and clear diction may not be deemed particularly important – like everyday informal speech for example.
