In some cases, this substitution could be based on a regional dialectical pronunciation of wasn’t as wan’t. But for some, there may be an eggcornish meaning connection between wasn’t and want in the sense of a lack of something, as in the phrase for want of, so possibly an eggcorn in some cases.

Or as wadn’t or wa’n’t where that first apostrophe corresponds to a very lenis (lax) glottal stop or alveolar flap. (Both of these are in the South Carolina part of my linguistic half-competency.)
