The tennis championships are not held at Wimbleton – but they could be, couldn’t they?
I hear this eggcorn frequently on the tennis courts of America. I wonder if this is because my opponents are aware of their tendency to soften their pronunciation of the letter “t,” so assume it must be more “correct” to pronounce Wimbledon this way – especially as “town” has become “ton” in plenty of other English place names – Brighton, Luton, Boston, Northampton …
