"basis" for "bassist"

I was thinking about Paul McCartney and suddenly realized that someone, somewhere has probably eggcorned bassist into basis. This would be expected because the term bassist is relatively uncommon compared to bass player, and because a band’s rhythm section (typically a drummer and a bassist) forms the “bottom” or basis upon which the melody is overlaid. Sure enough:

Since the recording had drums and a bass on it we called in our friends to act as a drummer and basis.

We played there several years ago. No one was there and my drummer and basis were getting harrassed by a carload of latinos when they walked to the store for cigs.
music club discussion

Hi, I have limited gig experience has a drummer and basis. Currently I play bass for a cover band.

It’s interesting to see that people write basis (with one ess) even though they clearly know that bass has two esses.
