Eyes in glass

This month Guinness announced it will bow to the vegan lobby and stop using isinglass to remove yeast haze from its beer, changing a two-and-a-half-century old recipe. Isinglass is a kind of sticky gelatinous protein product derived from fish air bladders that coagulates and precipitates particles out of solution in a process called ‘fining.’ Fish everywhere thank them. The term isinglass, as noted earlier by Ken Lakritz, is derived from 16th century Dutch words for sturgeon bladder, huizenblas, by a cute folk etymology/eggcorn that saw glass in the transparent glassy substance.

These days, isinglass is used for the transparent plastic windows that grace motorboats and, apparently, Model Ts. Our century’s contribution has been to point out the obvious: viewing the world through isinglass is literally putting eyes in glass. Or at least, eyesing things through glass. These start conjoined, then gradually split into constituent parts.

The fresh water pumps were done at the same time. The boat needs new eyesinglass. 250 gal fuel tank.

We were out Saturday and it just does not get much better. Little chilly, but the canvas took care of that. I actually had to open some eyesinglass.
Boat trip

maybe even a clear plastic window, such as the same material used on boat windows in the canvas area,....think its called “eyesinglass.” this window could be called the “truth” window. its a term from building straw bail homes. people cant believe that the walls are filled with straw, so builders, just for grins, will build a little cabinet door that reveals the interior of the wall.
Family story

I’m partial to no top myself, but I like the fact you have real windows and not eyesing glass that scratches.

He moved the eyes-in-glass window aside and poked his head out.
Historical novel

See also Ken Lakritz’s entry for icing glass. It’s based on another substance, the mineral mica, that has also been used for windows.

Isinglass is the mineral mica, which flakes into translucent sheets and can replace glass in windows. What makes the substitution especially eggcornish is that isinglass is an insulator- it protects against icy conditions.
