rifled with conflict

It’s been a while since we had a good blend to appreciate. It took me a while to figure out what was nagging me about rifled with, until it dawned on me that it was a blend of rife with and riddled with. It takes on added colours when it is gunplay that is rifled.

volunteer blog I thought sure, I’m expecting a country that’s rifled with conflict, working on the project with the NGO might be slow and a little frustrating, we might need to give out a few bribes.

Re: rifled with conflict

I agree, the “with” is peculiar. Normally we would employ the verbs “rifle” and “riffle” with the prepositional helper “through.” We might say “she rifled through the contents of her purse” or “he riffled quickly through the pages of the book.” The examples you cite must be, as you say, the result of some confusion with similar words that are on speaking terms with “with.”
