"chaste" for "chasten"

While researching similar substitutions, I happened upon this sort of thing:

Charlie just shrugged and looked down at the table, as though waiting for me to chaste him for meddling.

So, chaste for chasten. Hmmm. I think there may be a largely unconscious meaning connection for some folks because chastity is enforced by chastening people, such as girls being admonished not to sit with their legs open, etc. Also, some perps may think the word chasten is chasting (or chastin’), the ”-ing” form of the presumed verb to chaste.
