an "equitable" climate

I, too, am so glad I signed up. Spam aside, here’s a malaprop found in an article on chickadee metabolism: “They do not migrate south to a more equitable climate.” Their less hardy cousins are probably looking for a more equable climate down there. No eggcorn here, though it’s easy to see how the substitution might make sense in an even-handed, share the warmth kind of way.

Re: an "equitable" climate

Someone living in central Canada would think about sharing the warmth (low of -14C in Montreal tonight). In the tropics the people think about sharing the cool.

Could be an eggcorn. Weather that is equitable is not biased toward the hot or the cold, so it is equable and equitable.

Strong numbers on this mistake. One “equitable climate” in published sources for every ten examples “equable climate.”

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
