“Humungous” (also “humongous”), dating from around 1970, is thought to be “a fanciful mash-up of huge and monstrous” according to the Online Etymology Dictionary. Lately some folks have been trying to liberate “huge” from the mash-up, in a sort of back-formation that’s become common enough to appear in the Urban Dictionary.

The “mungus” in “huge mungus” reminds me of, e.g., the “honkin’” in “honkin’ big”. Neither is very clearly defined, but both are assumed to be intensifiers.
