pondtoon << pontoon

“Pondtoon” is a punning brand name for a popular line of pontoon boats (http://www.pondtoon.com/). The brand name has utterly polluted the spoken and written environment: “pondtoon boat” has become a generonym for “pontoon boat,” making real examples of the eggcorn “pondtoon” difficult to identify. When someone writes “I have a Pondtoon boat,” they probably reference the specific brand. When they say “I have a pondtoon boat,” they may be using the generonym.

Fortunately, not everything with pontoons is a boat:

Vehicle bulletin board post: “Looking for a pondtoon bridge to buy”

Comment on a network news article: “The Sea Bee’s could build a pondtoon bridge.”

Post on a US Forces site: “He is partially interested in attaining some photos of pondtoon bridges over the Inn River at Schärding.”

Description of a floating gold dredger:) “Gold King set up with extra hose’s, also has the pondtoons not pictured (like new)”

Ebay toy ad: “Vintage processed plastics aurora pondtoon seaplane”

“Pontoon,” of course, has no “pond” in its history. The source of “pontoon” is ultimately the Latin “pons” for “bridge.”

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.

Re: pondtoon << pontoon

Looks like a bona fide eggcorn to me. Good find.
