"Honing" pigeons

One of my favorites/most hated is when people talk about getting closer to their goal. They say they are”honing” in on it. I’m sure they think it’s a process of sharpening a point, rather than getting one’s bearings…

Not included there is the opposite substitution—hone>>home. Google.com has 1000s examples of “to home my/your/her,etc. skills.” Mindless malapropism or true eggcorn?
