"lead on" for "let on"

I encountered this the other day:

I didn’t lead on that I had done extensive research beforehand and asked him flat out what the big difference between Samsung and Vizio was.

It turns out that there are quite a few examples online, such as:

Jacob kept his cool all night and didn’t lead on that tonight was the night at all. Of course I didn’t have a clue

She didn’t lead on that there was any problem – that’s why it’s so shocking.

I didn’t lead on that I really, really want to get married but this is now all I can think about and he isn’t doing anything!

The eggcornish meaning connection could be that “letting on” about something could be conceived as “leading (someone) on” to some information. I suspect that the perps are thinking of “lead” as being pronounced like “led”—hence the pronunciation confusion with “let”.
