"Don't temp faith" for "Don't tempt fate"

I have to think this is a full blown eggcorn. The speaker must be thinking of someone temporarily having faith that harm will not befall them.

First saw it on a pinball forum in a discussion of doing circuit board repairs using a solder sucker:
“I always start off using the Hakko but once I notice it’s not cleaning the holes, I don’t temp faith because it will lift the pad.”

Google shows it being used a bunch of times. Sorry I have no counts as I’m doing this on a pad and the mobile page isn’t showing them.

That seems like a plausible eggcorn to me.

Re: "Don't temp faith" for "Don't tempt fate"

The bulk of the Google hits seem to be in the phrase “to tempt faith” rather than “don’t tempt faith.” Many hundreds of examples. A hit, a very palpable hit, DanQ.

Hatching new language, one eggcorn at a time.
